Dear First-Born Child

I want you to know that you’ll always hold the most special place in my heart; you will always be my baby no matter how many siblings you eventually have nor how old you become.

Thank you for being my first born, guiding me through all the “first-time experiences” and giving me so much patience as I master ALL about motherhood. From the first time we met, I knew it was love at first sight. Never imagined how I could fall in love with a “stranger” instantly and give my all to care for you. Braving through infant-hood wasn’t easy - to feed every 2 hours and live on a disrupted sleep routine for the first 3 months of your life, I swear I almost gave up. But YOU gave me the strength to carry on and fight against the odds. Thankful for you, I am stronger than I think I can be.

You helped me channel the “superpowers” I never knew I had. The power to multi-task (extensively); the power to breastfeed (amazing skill I never knew I would master); the power to protect you from danger (despite the limitations I may have as a woman).

Despite the challenges ahead of us, I felt limitless as long as I had you.

The arrival of a second child

I know things will never be the same when you have a sibling coming along. We will never have all the time to ourselves anymore and you may feel like love is shared. You may not believe when I say “I love my kids equally” but I hope you keep believing that you are indeed the most special one in my heart. For all the “first-times” we have gone through together, you have since become irreplaceable.

I feel the mom’s guilt as I type this.

Yet, I keep praying that you find the joy and happiness in having a companion - a sibling to count on for life.

Dear First-Born, you will always be my biggest pride because your presence marked the moment I took on a lifetime role called “Mother”. You will always be the first who tugged the strings to my heart when you mumbled your first “Mommy”. You will always be the first to witness my growth from an inferior mother who thinks she wasn’t going to make it to who I am today.

You gave me the will to be a better Mother.

You gave me the strength to be a better person.

You gave me the power to be who I am today.

And I assure you that nothing’s gonna change even if you’re not my only child in time to come. Thank you for being my First-Born.
